This is the Gospel of John from The Source New Testament with Extensive Notes on Greek Word Meaning. It contains abundant and detailed documentation for the meaning of hundreds of Greek words which appear in the New Testament. The Source is the only New Testament translation based on word meaning evidence from the recently discovered papyri and inscriptions. For centuries, translators had to guess the meaning of hundreds of New Testament words. After 1976, huge numbers of papyri and inscriptions were discovered containing these New Testament words in everyday documentation thus revealing their meaning. The Source is the only New Testament translation by a Classical Greek scholar (rather than theologian) and not financed or translated by a committee of a specific denomination.
JOHN'S GOSPEL The Source New Testament With Extensive Notes On Greek Word Meaning A Nyland 9781453752104 Books
Dr. Nyland has some worthwhile insights about translating koine Greek into English and many of her notes are worth reading. Many the points she makes in her notes are arguable but I didn't feel I was wasting my time by considering them.My problem with her has to do with her skill (or lack thereof) in writing English prose.
To say the least, her English text is awkward. You wouldn't want to have to read it aloud.
Three examples: In John 5:4, she says "for the reason that" instead of "because.
In John 5, she often uses the word "person" for "man" when it is clear that the reference is to a particular man, not to a human being of either gender.
It is considered poor style in English to use serial adverbs but Dr. Nyland uses them in John 1:32-34 and in John 4:47, just to list 2 examples I found quickly.
She needed a style editor.
