"Family Honor" by Judith Seal opens with a young girl rushing at dusk to a secret tryst in a village cemetery somewhere in the rugged mountains of Sicily. It closes with her daughter and granddaughter on board a luxury ocean liner leaving the Port of Naples. The time set of the novel is from 1923 through the sixties.The book is very well written and is a real page turner. All the action contained within its pages, is fast moving, suspenseful, surprising and shocking. Your jaw will drop, your eyes will involuntary widen and remain un-blinking for a second or two. The whirlwind lives of these three women...with all their virtue, honor & ...yes...faults...fly under the reader's eyes and over the pages as it mingles with the history and the social cultural of Italy.
Judith Seale... with insight and understanding... brings to life the living mind frame of those who at various structural levels, survived in a nation that had & was experiencing la miseria . The rush to Nationalism & Fascism, fueled by rhetoric ...pomp and parades...was...as history reminds us...very short lived. The severe anti-Semitism though out all of Europe during this era was neither shared nor practiced by all Italians. Their sacrifices, heroic efforts and reasons that they resisted, surfaces in the text of the novel. The characters and the story line seem to grasps your hand and lead you to...,and through , a world of land barons, charging steeds, the mafia, the Holy Mother the Church, of justice & of in-justice. A world of internal-individual honor, of intrinsic self respect and of a sense of dignity; but most of all, a world that reveals the inner worth of people.

The author has done a wonderful job in researching the historical and cultural background of Family Honor. Her story is compelling and describes wonderfully the young minds of the three young women--mother, daughter and grand daughter. Great romance and page turner!
A highly entertaining fictional romance novel based on historical facts. Taking place in Italy during the years before and beyond WWII, it is well written, with excellent imagery providing vivid character portrayal, along with a well crafted story. I could not put this book down once I started reading it and therefore highly recommend it! I look forward to the next one by this author.

The "Family Honor" by Judith Seal is a wonderful love story based on true historical events. If you like romance and history it's the novel for you. I could not put the book down (I basically "swallowed" it)!
It reminded me of another novel I've read years ago and liked very much "Chochara" ("Two women"), written by A.Moravia. Like that one, the "Family Honor" also takes place in Italy during WWII (a large part of it) and is about strong women. However, "Family Honor" is a superior novel, in my opinion, because there is so much love in it. This love, so pure and deep, was able to overcome the culture/class inequalities of those times, as well as family taboos, and survived the war and years of separation.
I hope to see more books by this author in the near future.
Wow. Just wow. While I love a good romantic yarn as much as the next person, but Judith Seal’s ‘Family Honor’ is that literary gem you only encounter so rarely, and so you end up treasuring the reading experience. It’s one of those books that will stay with you even days after reading it—and I haven’t even begun really describing it.
A deeply engaging novel of love, redemption, and yes, honor, ‘Family Honor’ is sort of “deceptive” because you don’t easily realize what you’re getting into—initially you’d think you’re reading a “harmless” sleeper of a novel, until you start reading even the first few pages and by then you’re helplessly drawn in—when other reviewers called this book a “page turner”, they’re actually putting it mildly, because ‘Family Honor’ is a veritable tour de force, a work that I believe deserves to be made into a Giueseppe Tornatore film—I even have a few ideas about who might play Francesca. Read even the prologue, then the first few chapters, and see what I mean about what a powerful read ‘Family Honor’ is.
What I love more about this book is how the author sinewed it with verisimilitude, integrating the plot with real-world historical events (consisting of the years before and after the Second World War)—and it’s not a small feat. The research it must have taken to write this book is one thing; to successfully create believable characters that live in that long-gone era is another and wrap the whole thing up in a tale that throbs with passion, suspense, and sometimes incredible twists, is another. Heck, even the small moments palpably feel so genuine.
Overall, ‘Family Honor’ is incredibly, deeply satisfying—it is a well-crafted tale by an obviously gifted writer at the height of her powers. Highly recommended to anyone who has read and loved novels like ‘The Heart is a Lonely Hunter’—get a copy of this book today. A solid five-star rating for this one.
